Joseph Smith Fowler papers, 1809-1902, bulk 1871-1902.

Primarily correspondence from the period following Fowler's retirement from the U.S. Senate, chiefly letters to and from family members. Correspondence related to Fowler's estate is also included. Genealogical information on the Fowler and Embry families can be found in the correspondence files. Some data is included on the Howard Female Institute in Gallatin, Tennessee, where Fowler was president, 1856-1861. Other Tennessee historical data is available in the letters of Gen. Alvan C. Gillem to Fowler. Although most of the correspondence in the collection is of a personal nature, a few items shed light on Foster's views on issues such as radical reconstruction, the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson, and currency.
